House Renovation to be done in stages

Hi! My wife and I bought a solid early 1980s construction 3brm split level home in Waikanae last year and we’re looking to renovate and improve it in stages over the next 5 – 10 years (depending on how our budget goes) while still living there with our two primary school aged kids. We’re looking for a builder who would be happy to work with us over that time frame, rather than doing a whole house reno in one hit. We have a pretty clear idea of what we want to do, starting with a little deferred maintenance and repainting the outside (we have the builder’s report to go on at this stage). Next, we want to convert the bottom level garage into the main living room. This part of the house is brick – everything else is weatherboard. After that we’d want to focus on the middle bedroom level including a new ensuite for the master bedroom utilising an existing separate shower room, and family bathroom renovation with all bedrooms needing to be repainted and new carpet throughout. Last for the house will be the top floor including changing to open plan layout, a kitchen reno and a deck that we want expanded so we can have another living space out there and really enjoy the views. Finally, we’ll need a new garage and probably a new fence too. By then the house will probably be ready for a repaint again!
