Fixing cracks along the side of stairs

I've a 15 step staircase in my 5 year old townhouse that has thin cracks alongside the side woodwork. I've made a bad attempt at fixing it so you'll need to fix my mistakes. If this fix goes well I might have a bigger job of fixing the fine cracks where the ceiling meets the wall in numerous places. I'd like the initial job completed by the end of January.
