Tidying up plastering in 1950s hallway

We have recently pulled the wallpaper off our hallway and have sealed the walls with pig-sealer. I have tried to get them looking perfect ready for paint, but I am unable to get a good enough surface. I am not wanting a show home finish, but want to smooth it out as much as possible.
