Plastering around attic ladder

We have just had a Sellwood ceiling ladder installed into quite a tight space. The area is an an alcove above the entrance door. In the process we have lost some of our existing cornice and we are looking for a tidy solution to the problem of finishing the area off ready for painting. Your suggestions would be most welcome
