Bathroom Gib Repair - Shower reseal

A section of bathroom gib near the shower is cracked, and partially water damaged. It needs to be repaired or replaced, and the wall cavity behind inspected for water damage and possible remedial work. We believe the shower to have been the cause, and that it needs a reseal as the old sealant has come away near the water damage. If there is the option of using more modern bathroom gib rather what was standard when build in the mid 90's, that would be preferred. This problem has developed slowly, and a partial reseal of the shower done, but a professional fix is desired.
