holes in wall in lounge

The wall under double windows in the lounge is weak/soft, possibly from a leak in the roof? It has old damage that someone has fixed up in the past but it is soft and there are two holes on either side of this old damage. The holes are too big to mend with putty and piece of plasterboard, and the surrounding plasterboard is weak and damp. So need to remove all of the plasterboard and replace with new. Approx 4m long x 1m high.
