Ugly textured plastered ceiling needs to go

Today we replaced some old lights with new lighting throughout our 1980 3 bedroom home. The new LED lights look great however we are stuck with a few holes that need to be repaired. Our lounge is the biggest concern as it had textured plaster that has been painted over and we want it gone whether replacing the entire lounge ceiling is an option or sanding it back I'm not sure. The rest of the house should be an easy fix.
