Prepare ceiling and walls as part of renovation

We are currently renovating our bedrooms. As part of this, we have moved ceiling lights and removed wallpaper. Due to moving the ceiling lights we have a number of holes in the gib. Likewise, the walls have their fair share of dents and even some holes. We are looking to get the ceiling and walls tidied up before painting the ceilings and adding wallpaper to the side walls. The photo is indicative of the holes that have been cut as part of moving the lights. The holes will be closed again. We want to reduce the visibility of the cutouts as much as possible.
