Repair Particle Board Stair Risers #2

I recently removed the old and worn carpet from the stairs. I tried to be as careful as possible; however when removing the carpet tracks, I caused small gouges in the particle board risers. Please see the photos. The stairs are varnished and I quite like the look, as it goes with the rest of the interior. I'd like to see if the risers can be filled and/or sanded back and then painted (white), or faced somehow etc.
