Stair Painting

I tried to paint the wooden sides of my carpeted stairs before the carpet was replaced recently. I didn't do a great job. I've sanded most of it back and to avoid doing another bad job I'd like to see if it's worth getting a pro in to paint it this time (and to avoid paint on the new carpet!). Approx 11 steps - one flight.
