Lawn/Garden rejuvenation

We are wanting to rejuvenate our back lawn and garden as it’s looking pretty shabby. We have a basic idea of want we want to do which involves re-doing the lawn itself (i.e. leveling and re-sowing/seeding or laying ready lawn. approx 80sqm) and extending the existing garden out, but we are very open to other ideas as well. One of the main issues at present is the roots of the large gum(?) tree extend out onto the lawn area and are exposed in several places. Also the existing lawn is not very level and is really patchy which isn’t great. There are a couple of options we want to explore: 1) Re-do the lawn only (leveling and re-sowing/over-seeding/ready lawn) and somehow dealing with the exposed tree roots 2) Re-do the lawn and extend/upgrade the garden (either our basic idea or something similar) 3) Other basic re-design of the whole area taking into account our limited budget (approx. $4k) I’ve included a photo of the current state and a really average mock-up of our basic idea but as I mentioned we’re open to other designs so long as they fit within our budget.
