Replace/repair retaining wall

We have a wooden retaining wall in our garden that has seen better days. We are looking to repair or replace it, depending on which will be more cost effective. We are open to other landscaping solutions that we may not necessarily have thought of either. The approximate lenght of the wall is 8m and about 0.9m high. Please refer to photo. It is the long wall connected to the staircase. We are not in a terrible hurry to get it done. So anytime after xmas/new year is fine with us.
