Insulation/noise reduction

We have recently moved into double story house with wooden floors upstairs.There is no insulation between the floor and the ceilings below. The noise level is unreal. The sound from upstairs, seems to echo down stairs.One of the bedrooms is directly below the kitchen with the lovely wooden floor! Also the sound from the kitchen travel straight into the main bedroom on the same level. Can anything be done to reduce the sound?
