Fire Place Reno/upgrade

We have an old open fireplace in our 1920's bungalow and the fire bricks are all crumbling and breaking up. Instead of getting these replaced and still having an inefficient fire we were wondering about getting an new insert wood-burner put in. The fire place is a small one - 600h x 450w x 350d (at deepest point).
