Just purchased a house with a built in Kent fireplace with wetback and brick surround (on 1.3Ha section in a Rural area just out of Hamilton). Previous owners told us they had not done any maintenance on it since the house was built in '95. Door seal looks very tired, and the roof of the inside of the firebox is cracked and warped. I assume the sum of these issues is why we don't seem to get much heat into the room from the fire even though the wetback heats the water cylinder brilliantly. At this point I don't know if the better option is to repair or replace as I have heard reconditioning is usually worth while, but would like to also run a hot water radiator heating system for the rest of the house off the wetback in the future.
