Flued gas heater removal

I’ve recently purchased a house that has an old flued gas heater. I’d like to get this removed as it is not being used. The gas heater is in the living room and the flue is in the laundry lining cupboard behind the living room wall. I’m not sure what state the wall will be behind it. Are you also able to replace the gib if there is a big gap?
