Modify Heatpump to operate as a Ground Source Heatpump

Job description

Aircon & Heatpump Repair
Christchurch

Published: 15 February 2023

In winter, the efficiency of heat pumps is generally low when the outside temperatures are close to zero. However, the ground temperature at a depth of 50cm or more remains relatively constant at around 10-15 degrees Celsius, even during the coldest winter in Canterbury. To take advantage of this constant ground temperature, the plan is to modify an existing heat pump so that the external unit can draw in water from a closed loop water pipe buried in the ground. This water in the loop is warm even when the outside temperature is freezing, resulting in a much higher heat pump efficiency. As an electronics engineer, I am capable of designing the control systems for the water pump, temperature monitoring, power usage monitoring, and so on. However, I require someone with the necessary tools and expertise in heat pumps to work with me on this project. Canterbury's moist soil conditions make it an ideal location for ground source heat pumps. By using the natural warmth from the ground, we can create green, efficient heat pumps that should help lower power bills during the winter months.
