Rinnai gas fire

I have just moved in and when I put the gas fire on, it makes a popping sound during the time it is on. If I turn the gas up to the highest setting the popping sound stops. If I turn the gas right down the popping sound increases. The flame is predominantly yellow. in all other respects the fire appears to be operating normally but the sound is annoying.
