Broken fire dial

There is a dial/knob which controls the high/low control that has broken and needs replacing, but the main problem is when the knob was working, while adjusting between high and low it would usually stop half way with a clunk sound and the feeling something is physically stopping it being adjusted the whole way, and sometimes there would just be the clunk sound but it would knock past what was trying to stop it and travel all the way to high or low. I have never had the fire serviced before (have swept the chimney myself) so if there is also some other things in the fire which may need attention to keep it working good I would be interested to know also.
