I have a two storey bach at Boulder Bay,around from Taylors Mistake. The chimney was badly damaged in the June quakes. If it's not removed soon it may collapse and cause more damage. It has pulled out from the side of the bach, together with the hearth and fire surround. The bach is insured with State, and a claim has been lodged with the EQC,who have told me that as long as the cost is under $2000 I can make my own arrangements with a contractor for the chimney to be removed, and the bach to be made weathertight, with the bill to be sent to the EQC. This is a difficult job,as there is no road access to Boulder Bay-the only practical access in this case is either by boat,or by walking down the hill from above-the bach owners have access through DOC land which enables us to park our vehicles on a bluff just above the bay, with a five minute walk downhill from there (we often carry or sledge building materials etc downhill ourselves!) However,it would probably be necessary to take the concrete etc from the broken chimney out by boat, for later dumping.
