Removal of broken extractor fan in window; new glass needed

This is (hopefully) a small job but I don't really know who to look up in the Yellow Pages, so here it is in case anyone's interested. When I bought my house two years ago there was an extractor fan in a small kitchen window. I've only used it occasionally - what happens is that I have to pull a cord to open the shutter on the outside, and then the fan starts up. There's no switch that I can see - it may have a fuse, I don't know. Anyway, the last time I tried to pull the shutter closed again, the cord/chain broke off and I couldn't shut the shutter, and had to put up with it whirring away all night until I bought some duct tape and taped it closed on the outside. So now I don't really know whether to just have this extractor fan removed, and a new pane of glass put in, or whether I should get a new extractor fan. The stove is not on an outside wall so I can't have a fan there. I think I'm more inclined to just go without one and open a window when the kitchen gets steamed up. But I'm open to ideas. If I just get new glass for the window, the glazier would also have to know how to remove the extractor fan - I don't know if this is a big deal or not.
