Repairs to a bathroom ceiling

Our downstairs bathroom has a shower directly above it. There is water damage to their ceiling. The shower area is 1m x 1m. Please cost two options: 1. Repair the ceiling as shown in the photos and paint the bathroom 2. Cut out the damaged section and replace with a piece of white acrylic (5mm if possible) and place over the cut out piece with screws to enable future repairs.
