Staining a verandah roof

The roof of our verandah needs staining. The surface has been washed/scrubbed and about a third has been given 2 coats of stain already ....until my husband tore his achilles. A few beams under the perspex part of the roof also need a steady hand to stain. It isn't a big job or a tricky job but care is needed not to drop stain on the deck or walls so a careful worker would be appreciated.
