Customise existing or build new letterbox

We have an existing brick letterbox that matches our house that is both large and largely useless. It has one slot and shallow receptacle for letters that is a magnet for water. We’d like to either adapt the current one to make it more waterproof and add a courier box at the back. Or, if it’s a lost cause, to build us a new one that actually works. We are flexible time wise but the sooner the better (so that any mail we do get actually survives our letterbox’s attempts to drown it first).
