Re-putty / replace glass in timber frames

I have two windows in my 1970s home that let a small amount of water into the wooden frame when it rains heavily. One has some putty that is obviously damaged. The larger is --- approx the smaller being 950 x 1200. If needing to be replaced I’d prefer to use safety glass for the larger window.
