Disconnection and Removal of Debonair gas heater

We have an old debonair gas heater in our lounge not sure if it is connected it doesn't work, we would like it removed so we can get rid of the fire place surround and gib it up. If anyone could help with the removal that would be great it would be even better if you could help with the removal and patch up of the fire place surround.
