Recommissioning Gas Heater

I have an old gas heater located in my lounge which has not been used for a long time. I have reconnected my property to the main gas line for my water so there is a potential for my family to use the gas heater to heat the lounge and corridor this winter. I am just not sure how safe it is and I also need to know how to fire it.
