Kitchen and bathroom extractor fans

To comply with the HH standards, I need kitchen and bathroom extractor fans to be installed. I was thinking an exhaust fan (of the minimum diameter as per standards) would be fine. The kitchen has a "rangehood" above the stove but it isn't connected externally, it's one of those that just circulates the air! - I'm not sure if it's an easy job to connect this up or to just install an extractor fan on the wall instead - probably the latter.
