Job description

French Doors
Waitakere

The Job is to deal with rot on the sill of a set of Wooden French doors, and to adjust and rehang doors so they function without jamming. Background The set of wooden French doors shown in the pictures were part of the house when we brought it 10 years ago. The house is now almost 20 years old. Based on the layout of the house we think these doors were added after construction. We want to keep the doors. The doors have never been that wonderfully adjusted. We have to slam them to close them and there is jamming that occurs at two places. 1. The doors themselves jam, i.e. the vertical meeting point of the doors does not meet nicely. 2. The doors, particularly the one shown as damaged in these photos, scrapes along the sill when closing This scraping has had the effect of removing the paint and opening up the wood to water and rot. As a consequence the sill has rotted and needs to be fixed or replaced. The sill and threshold appear to be one piece of wood so replaced would mean both were replaced. As a non-expert it seems to me that replacement of sill and probably threshold is the best course because the rot on the sill runs underneath the wood, i.e. is coming up from the bottom as well as the top. Photos 001a - Shows an internal view of the doors. 001b - Closeup of the damage to the bottom of the door. I have scaped the rot away and there is a cavity in this area that needs to be bogged or replaced. The brown tape you can see is masking tape to keep bugs out. 002 – External view 003 – Closeup of Sill damage 004 – Sill damage – door open. Threshold looks OK but who knows what the bottom is like. 005 – Closeup of Sill damage. I have dug a lot of it out with a chisel. (Was intending to bog it if it was not extensive but now realise it is a job for the pros.) 006 – Closeup from side of the damage to the bottom of the door and the sill. EDIT: The frame of the door has also rotted a little at the bottom and would need to be fixed. Will post another photo. 007 - Photo showing damage to bottom of frame where it was rest on sill. I have since cut away that part of the sill. I imagine this is a common issue with these doors and so hope this is sufficient explanation to provide an estimate on. What I would like at the end is to have these doors opening and closely sweetly without jamming, and all the rot dealt with. Happy to paint any renovated area ourselves. We are presently renovating the house and have become somewhat expert at painting things. Thanks
