Small concrete repair

Hi, there is a small piece of wood (no idea why) in the concrete garage floor where the floor meets the outside concrete. It looks like it’s previously been covered but cover has broken away. Just looking to get it fixed, maybe the wood removed and gap filled or just covered again whatever is easiest. Or any advice why the wood is there?
