Install 2 hand carpet

I bought a bound carpet square that should fit in the designated space though it needs shaping around a staircase and perhaps nailing down in that corner! I’ll take your advice in that. I’m thinking to just lay it over existing tired carpet like a rug for increased winter warmth. It is a temporary measure until I am in a position to replace the original carpet.
