Fix creaking floorboards

There are creaky floorboards in the lounge - you can't step anywhere without it being heard very loud in the bedroom below (where a newborn sleeps most the day). The lounge is fully carpeted with underlay. Please can anybody help reduce the creaking? I've hard that the carpet can be cut and then nails put into a few places to reduce creaking - I'd be fine with this being done if it makes a difference!
