Reattach locking mechanism

Our old door has been retrofitted to use an internal bolt locking system on the top and bottom of our door. To house the internal bolt, a grove was whittled away so it could slot it. Unfortunately the screws that held the bolt in place have lost it grip. There isn't much space to reattach the screws. I'm looking on ideas on how to use the current bolt system on the door. One option could be to add a new block of wood to the door to house the bolt system.
