wall/cupboard alteration

Job description

General Building
Waitakere

Currently the oven sits in a very tight space located between the kitchen bench (with a dishwasher underneath) and a cupboard wall, see attached picture. I'd like the cupboard wall altered to create more space for the oven. The wall only needs to move by 50mm, and then there would be increased space for the oven to be more easily installed or removed for repairs etc. I have attached a rough sketch of the existing layout and how the wall would need to move. There is plenty of space inside the cupboards should the cupboard space need to be reduced to allow for the moved wall. I'm happy to repaint the cupboard and wall after repairs have been made, so looking for a price on just the materials and building work etc. Also the bottom cupboard door is currently screwed on, and I would like to get this mounted on hinges. I would appreciate a quote for this job. Any questions don't hesitate to call and discuss further. Many thanks, Andrew

Initially Tyrone provided a competitive price, although he quoted without going on site to review the job. However part way into the job he phoned and said job was a lot more challenging and involved than expected and asked for more money. I agreed to paying more but regretted doing so afterwards, after people pointed out to me itiwas really his responsibility to scope the job and stick to the initial quote. If he had provided a quote based on the amount of the final payment we agreed to I may have been selected someone else. I arrived on site after receiving a phone message to say the work was complete and he was satisfied with the job. I was very disappointed when I viewed the work. The new wall that he had built was significantly not vertically plumb, the cupboard doors that he had rehung were not hung straight, and he had screwed into the end grain of MDF packers splitting the packers which although he said they were glued and strong, to the eye looked very rough and dodgy, the hinges he used were uneven and twisted, and he had used over sized screws on the hinges so the cupboard door would not fully close. I called Tyrone, discussed these issues and my disappointment. We met back on site to discuss these issues and he agreed to improving the straightness of the wall, and rehanging the door with better hinges and fasteners. Tyrone said he was basically built the wall to fit the existing framework. We talked through a solution of placing a wider packer into the structure to better support a wall that could be plumb. In my opinion it was totally unacceptable to walk away from a job with a wonky wall and a poorly hung door and call that finished. I asked him to next time call me in advance if he had concerns about not getting the wall straight and we could find a better solution rather than going ahead with some dodgy building work and walking away. When I returned to view his modifications the wall had improved in regards to being more plumb. However he had replaced the split and broken MDF packers with very roughly cut pine packers. He had replaced the hinges with better condition hinges but again used over size fasteners so the hinges were unable to close fully. The door was still not hung straight, and there was a visible 10mm gap at the bottom of the cupboard door. The packers that Tyrone had used around the edges of the cupboard were also roughly cut with split edges and not straight. I felt unconfident about Tyrones ability to get the job finished to a respectable level, and engaged the services of another builder at my own cost to come properly finish the job. As you can tell, I was very disappointed and frustrated with the quality of workmanship for this relatively minor wall alteration. Tyrone showed a very low commitment to getting the job finished to a professional level. I would recommend people considering to use his services to not be lured by his low cost estimate (which he then asked for more money once engaged in the job) and save your time and money for someone who is skilled, professional and committed to completing a satisfactory job.

"About 1 in 10 people i find on builders crack are like this because people can review you they think there god and you have bend over for them. there nothink wrong with your work it was not perfect the first time because i can only work with what i got but the second time it was fine. Even if did got and have a look at the job i would have not seen bits in till i got into the job and i said to him i will be happy with another $70 but as we have agred on a price you dont have to. i done free this and free that to make it perfect the second time. when your working with old and new sometimes its better to stick your hand in your pocket and have all new. what some people want is as much work done and pay as little as poss. i went to 4 shops to look for the correct hinges but i could not find and made what i needed. Theres still a few more bits on the front of the cudboard that need doing sure you would like it all done for free but i was only doing the side. the reason the door as a 10mm gap at the bottom is because i was useing the door than u had and did want wanna spend $40 getting a new door and hinges are fine i got pictures off all the work because i been in this game long enought to know who i am dealing with and in the next few day i will put a link on here to show every one the cudboard and like people decide if your talking out your butt. if u not happy i will come and take it all out and give your cash back if you want the same hinges go and run around all the shops in auckland and find a set the hinges i used are 3mm bigger. Did you still wanna quote for the other work? i know a nice xhinese man that works for a bowl of rice a day"
