Let there be light!

I would like a solution to getting light into my living room. It is very dark because of the roof overhang and so I had a skylight installer come round to give a quote. He said that because of the ridgelines he would not be able to install a skylight. There must be other ways to get light into my living room. I do not want a solartube as I do not believe it will make a lot of difference. I am thinking that perhaps a line of shallow (in depth) windows around the lower levels of the roof may be the answer but I am open to any suggestions..
