Remove the open fire and then turn the circled void space into built-in cupboards so that we could push a bed and bedside table up against the wall. There would be a cupboard at the bottom (push-to-open mechanism) and then a large shelved cupboard at the top (push-to-open mechanism). Something like the image attached; it doesn't have to have pretty panelling, however.
