Repair to roof beam

I had a slow leak in my roof which has been repaired, but one of the beams from the top of the roof got water damage and has rotted away at the bottom. There was apparently a notch on the beam at the bottom which fitted into the horizontal "strut" (or whatever the technical term is). I am led to understand that the only way this can be repaired is to go through the roof. I'm not sure if I need a builder or a roofer for this. I would need the work done December/January.
