Raise wooden doorstep of Villa to prevent drafts

The doorstep is flush with the wooden flooring and there is a large gap where drafts and rain gets in. A handyman has installed a strip of wood but this is unsightly and also a tripping hazard. I'm not sure if it is possible to remove and replace the doorstep at this stage although I will consider this. I would like the whole doorstep to be raised perhaps with a piece of wood which is cut to fit around the mouldings etc. Please see photos.
