Air Vents

I have two wooden air vents ( --- ) in the roof peaks that are allowing birds in to nest between the vent and the building paper. I cant get to them internally as the building paper is in between. I believe the vents will need to be removed, have mesh placed on the back of the vent and re pointed back into the blockwork to make them birdproof.
