Small patches of old asbestos-backed vinyl to remove

We are remodeling our kitchen and when we pulled out the old cabinets we found small square patches of old vinyl under most of them. We are pretty sure the vinyl contains asbestos as it is the same pattern as vinyl we had removed in dining years ago. The patches are actually very small and I don't think it would take long. We would ideally like to be able to sand/finish the floorboards afterwards and would like advice on if that is doable/safe?
