Plans for the removal of a support wall

We bought a two storey house which we are in the process of renovating. One of the walls in the kitchen is an internal wall which appears to be mostly "empty", however from "knocking" on it it sounds like there is a support beam, potentially even two somewhere in the wall. This wall is in the middle of the house. I have been to the council to try to obtains plans of the house but was not able to get anything due to the lack of info and poor quality of what was available at all. We would like to get plans drafted for these alterations in order to be able to obtain consent.
