Tree Trimming

We need a few branches trimmed back off a big tree where it is banging on the roof of some flats we own. I presume it's not a good time to be doing a major pruning job - from the trees point of view I mean - but we need to do something more major with this tree at some stage and so we also want some advice about what can be done and when we should do it.
