Dial on wash cycle broken

Tbe dial has been pushed off the front panel. It seems the blue rod connecting it to the machine has snapped shorter so now unable to connect and move through washing options. I’ve tried putting a snall dowel in its place and that seems to work the controls. Am wondering if anyone can fix or confirm it’s as simple as making the blue connecting rod longer, or whether the end of the blue connector had a certain shape. Photos will clarify description more clearly.
