Old chimney needing waterproofing/sealing

Hi there I have abit of a problem which needs some urgent care. My house is a 1950s home and the previous owners covered the old chimney with a piece of Gib board, unsure if any sealing was done behind it. We only found out after removing wallpaper that the wall where the chimney was has mildew throughout so Im assuming waters coming from somewhere. Would kindly appreciate having someone take a look at this please. Many thanks
