Repair of pillar of dry stone wall
Job description
There is a dry stone wall at the front of my property with a letter box built in to the pillar on my driveway. Letters go in at the road frontage and are removed from the letterbox on the side facing the driveway (ie: at right angles.) The letter box leaks like a sieve leaving me with soggy letters and providing a good home for snails that eat my letters. Two attempts have been made to repair the problem - neither was successful. I think that the best solution may be either to take down the pillar to the level of the bottom of the letterbox (an area 50 cm high - 60 cm wide on the driveway side and 62 cm wide on the road frontage) and rebuild as a solid pillar or possibly fill in the gap on the driveway side and the gap produced by removal of the letterbox flap. A new letterbox could then be attached on the driveway side to the wall beyond the pillar which is recessed and the house number reattached or remaining attached on the road frontage. I had wanted to keep the brass letterbox flap and letterbox inset in the pillar to match my neighbour's on the other side of the driveway, but this has failed twice so I will need to compromise unless anyone has a brilliant idea as to how I can have a waterproof letterbox with the current setup. The stone in the pillar could be re-used and supplemented with extra to fill the cavity.

It was difficult to decide on the right solution for my problem. In the end, the pillar of the wall was rebuilt and a new letterbox attached to the wall on the driveway. I am delighted with the end result - worth waiting for! I will ad a photo of the finished work tomorrow if I am still able to do so after my review has been submitted.
