Alternative to super steep basement staircase

We have stairs that are extraordinarily steep from our main living space to our basement, where there is a section where you have to duck to avoid hitting floorboards above our head. We are interested in seeing what alternatives we have. For example, we might be able to change the direction of the stairs and take some space from our bathroom.
