Gas hot water cylinder check

We've got an old (c. --- L gas hot water cylinder that could do with a look-over. There is a faint smell of gas in the hot water cupboard and we're not getting enough hot water out of it to run a bath. We'd like to find out whether there's any faults with the cylinder as we want to keep it running until we upgrade to a continuous hot water system in the next 12 months.
