Water hammer/check hot water pipes (New Plymouth)

There is a water hammer sound when we shut off hot water too fast. Would like someone to take a look and check if this is causing damage. Would also like check/advice on hot water pipes/cylinder/flue(?) as there is a knocking sound for a long time after hot water has finished running.
