drainlayer - basement flooding

2 storey house next to a reserve with a basement that is flooding when it rains. The basement, to first floor level on the reserve side, is below ground level. We have been told we need surface drainage in the form of a deep trench with drainage gravel plus a box gutter top to alleviate this problem. Extensive rainwater comes off the reserve which is essentially a large hill behind the house.
