pilot light going out - thermostat not working

Hi. I've got a 25 year old Vulcan Freeloader hot water cylinder, and the pilot light keeps going out. I can relight it, but it takes a lot of patience to get the full flame burning, and then the thermostat doesn't cut out the full flame. We've got a renovation planned, so we just need to get another 6 months out of this system.
